Should I join with a Business Membership?

If you find yourself asking this question, the answer is likely "yes", regardless of if you have employees or are a one-person business.

While using the space for commercial purposes (rather than personal DIY projects that you aren't selling) is perfectly acceptable here, these members tend to be heavier users of our equipment over time, contributing more to our maintenance burden than individual members. To compound this, business members are often more demanding of equipment availability due to deadlines (reminder: membership does not guarantee availability of any specific tools!) which clashes with our entirely volunteer-led maintenance efforts.

While there is no strict policing of commercial vs. personal use of the space, we ask that any members who will regularly use the space for commercial purposes, become Business Members. If you use the space for at least one "moneymaking" project every 2 months or so, that's "regularly", even if you more often use the space for personal projects.

This is also an important source of additional funds for sustaining our makerspace, so we extend this recommendation to you even if your projects aren't time-sensitive or demanding on our equipment. Asking business members to pay more helps us keep the rates low for individuals, which may include college students or underprivileged citizens.

While our organizational structure does not allow us to offer "exclusive perks" to Business Members, contact us to make custom arrangements such as multiple employee access cards.
